The Stark Public Special Olympics 4th Annual Ellen Helling Memorial Golf/Outing Fundraiser at Skyland Pines Golf Course will be held on September 24, 2011 with check-in starting at 11:30 a. m.

Stark Public Special Olympics teams consist of Stark County athletes that qualify for Special Olympics. Our program, which has been providing quality sports programs to Stark Public Special Olympians for the past 23 years, provides athletes with the opportunity to participate in one or more of eight sports: basketball, bowling, figure skating, powerlifting, softball, speed skating, tennis and track & field. Over 100 athletes, throughout Stark County, currently participate with the assistance of 45-50 coaches and other volunteers.

Although affiliated with Special Olympics Ohio and Special Olympics International, Stark Public Special Olympics does not receive any funds from the state, national or international level. We are not affiliated with any specific school district. Our program is open to all Special Olympic athletes throughout Stark County, starting at age 8 and continuing as long as the athlete wishes to participate.

The Stark Public Special Olympics athletes practice and participate in competitions throughout Ohio and some have participated nationally and internationally. They develop their bodies and minds through hard work, accomplishment, and teamwork.

2010 Summer Games, The Royal Knights

COLUMBUS–Stark Public Special Olympics (the “Royal Knights”) brought home 38 medals along with 10 ribbons during the June 25-27, 2010 Ohio Special Olympics Summer Games at Ohio State University. The Summer Games are the equivalent of the “Super Bowl” for the athletes in attendance.

The event kicked off with its traditional opening ceremonies, including a parade of athletes, an appearance by the newly crowned Miss Ohio, and the lighting of the “Flame of Hope,” Friday evening at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.

It’s about 90 minutes from Wendy’s to NCMS.

The Games officially start with Opening Ceremonies, Friday June 25th at 6:30 in Jessie Owens Memorial Stadium. During Opening Ceremonies, the Law Enforcement Torch Run will run the Flame of Hope into the stadium filled with our athletes and fans.
