2011 Stark Public Special Olympics (SPSO) Basketball

Teams compete at the adult level, school age, and skills (age 8 and up) levels, and a thread of success runs through them all. Sean Broom coaches the school-age team. Rob Cramer coaches the adult-age team. The teams practice two or three times a week.

Final for SPSO Royal Knights school age team from Lorain Co. CC: SPSO SA Royal Knights-62/Mahoning Co. Warriors-38. Leading scorers for the Royal Knights: Max Broom with 25, Ricky Plaster with 19, Robby Nudo with 8, and Cameron Broom with 7 points. The Royal Knights next play on Saturday 3/27/2011 at 4pm in Anderson Arena on the Bowling Green Campus for the D-1 School Age Basketball Championship.

The SPSO Royal Knights adult division finished their season in third place at the Ohio State North Division Tournament. On Sat. 2/26/2011, they defeated Lake Deepwood 44 to 39. Leading scorers were Chaz Maclean with 14 points, Tim Claiborne with 10, Tyler Cramer with 8, and Matt Luther with 6. Next round, Sun. 2/27/2011, they lost to Cuyahoga, 65-48. Leading scorers: Chaz Maclean with 25 big points, Tim Claiborne with 10, Matt Luther and Tyler Cramer each with 4. The end to a very good season that showed good development. Looking forward to next year.

2010 Stark Public Special Olympics (SPSO) Basketball

Continuity is the backbone of the Stark Public Special Olympics “Royal Knights” basketball program.

The adult-level team is in its first year, but in the past four seasons, that group of players made it to the state school-age semifinals twice, finished second once, and won the 2007 Ohio Special Olympics Division II basketball championship. Six members of the 2007 championship team are still part of the 2010 program: Cory Amatangelo, Cory Martin, Max Broom, Nick Doll, Chaz MacLean, Brandon Mayes, and Joey Zickafoose.

The adult team’s home games are at Pfeiffer Middle School in Perry Township. The school-age practices are at Barr Elementary and Martindale Christian Church, with home games at Middlebrach Elementary.

Bruce Martin and Sean Broom share coaching duties of the 13-member school-age team and the 12-member adult-age team. The teams travel as far as Columbus and Toledo. They also practice two or three times a week.
